An old envelop mailed from Omaha to Rapid City
Omaha to Rapid, 1952
charcoal, collage, gesso

This drawing was pivotal in my search to develop a new approach to my drawing practice. By using scraps of collage material as a stand-in for objects or passages in my drawings I liberated myself from my tendency towards accuracy. Drawing became fun again.
The color of this old envelope was a close shade to the actual vase I was drawing and since I didn't want added color it was perfect. It was the first collage/drawing in this series and it forged the new approach to drawing that I was searching for.
