This monotype was recently juried into the exhibition, Passages by Gwen F. Chanzit, Curator Emeritus of the Denver Art Museum. The show is sponsored by the Women's Caucus for Art, Colorado Chapter. It will be showing at the Niza Knoll Gallery in Denver between November 15 - December 20. I'll be at the opening on November 15. Please join me.

My artist's statement:
The Black Sea, By Way of the Bosphorus, refers to a major passage between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea which runs through Istanbul, also referred to as the Golden Horn. An alternative title is The Black Sea By Way of the Veil. The black woodcut area is symbolic of waves on the Black Sea while the gold chine-colle is symbolic of the Naqib, an Islamic face covering for women.

"As the juror for Passages, I had a formidable task! Of around 550 entries, only 50 could be selected for the exhibition (confession: I actually included 54 works; some were quite small). What both delighted and challenged me was the high quality of art. That made culling more than 9 of every 10 entries difficult, and many fine works are not included. I am excited to see this very strong collection in person and I look forward to celebrating with the Women’s Caucus for Art.
